COEX Mall Seoul is famous for Starfield Library, but there is much more to explore than its enormous bookshelves. You can shop for Korean fashion and beauty products, eat everything from inexpensive Korean meals to premium restaurant food, visit an aquarium and even combine your trip with a traditional Buddhist temple.
The challenge is figuring out where to go. Starfield COEX Mall, Parnas Mall and Hyundai Department Store are connected, but they offer different shopping and dining experiences. The complex is large enough that choosing the right subway station and planning a simple route can save considerable time.
I recently explored the area on a Sunday during a three-day Korean holiday weekend. I walked through the shopping areas, spent time sitting at Starfield Library, compared dining options and checked facilities for families.
I also have a longer connection to this area. When my child was younger, we regularly traveled here with a stroller and held an annual pass to COEX Aquarium.
This guide combines that family experience with my latest visit to help you decide what is actually worth your time.
Is COEX Mall Worth Visiting?
COEX is worth visiting if you want to combine several activities in one place. It is particularly convenient for Korean fashion shopping, families looking for indoor activities and travelers who want to see Starfield Library.
It’s also a useful destination when Seoul’s weather makes outdoor sightseeing less appealing.
However, I wouldn’t recommend crossing the city just to browse international clothing chains that you can find at home. If the library is your only interest, you may be satisfied with a relatively short visit.
The real advantage of COEX is being able to combine the library with shopping, food and another attraction without traveling between several neighborhoods.
Here’s how I would use the time available:
| Time | My Recommended Route |
|---|---|
| 1 hour | Take whichever subway line is more convenient. Bongeunsa Station (Line 9) and Samseong Station (Line 2) are both a short walk from Starfield Library. Visit the library, browse a few nearby shops and grab a quick snack. |
| 2 hours | Start at Samseong Station, walk through Parnas Mall and Hyundai Department Store, then finish at Starfield Library. This route doesn’t include a sit-down meal. |
| 3–4 hours | Enter from Bongeunsa Station, visit Starfield Library, explore Korean fashion and beauty stores, enjoy a meal and browse character merchandise or souvenirs. |
| Half a day | Follow one of the shopping routes above and add either SEA LIFE COEX Aquarium or Bongeunsa Temple. |
| Most of a day | Combine Starfield Library, shopping, meals, the aquarium and Bongeunsa Temple, allowing plenty of time for breaks and walking. |
These are flexible suggestions, not strict schedules. If you’re traveling with a stroller, enjoy shopping or plan to eat at a popular restaurant, allow extra time.
Getting to COEX Mall: Samseong or Bongeunsa Station?
COEX has two convenient subway entrances. Both stations connect to the complex, but they aren’t equally convenient for every destination.
Bongeunsa Station: My Preferred Entrance for COEX Mall
If you mainly want to explore Starfield COEX Mall, I recommend Bongeunsa Station on Line 9.
Follow the signs toward Exit 7 and COEX Mall. The connected passage leads through the ASEM Plaza side of the complex.
During my recent visit, I found this approach more straightforward when my main goal was to get directly into the shopping mall.
It’s also convenient if you want to visit nearby Bongeunsa Temple.
Samseong Station: Better for Parnas Mall and Hyundai

Samseong Station on Line 2 is a useful alternative, particularly if you’d like to start with premium shopping or the department store.
Follow the signs toward Exits 5 and 6 and COEX. On the route I used, the shopping connections divided toward Parnas Mall and Hyundai Department Store on one side and COEX Mall on the other.
It took me approximately 10 minutes to walk from Samseong Station to Starfield Library.
That’s manageable, but first-time visitors may be distracted by the various shopping entrances and signs along the way.
If both subway lines are equally convenient for your journey, I would choose Bongeunsa Station for a COEX-focused visit and Samseong Station for a shopping route that begins with Parnas Mall.
How COEX Mall, Parnas Mall and Hyundai Department Store Connect

One reason COEX can feel confusing is that visitors often refer to the entire area simply as “COEX,” even though several separate shopping facilities are connected.
Understanding their differences makes the complex easier to navigate.
Starfield COEX Mall is the extensive shopping area containing Starfield Library, casual fashion and beauty stores, restaurants, entertainment and the aquarium.
Parnas Mall is a smaller connected shopping area offering premium brands and contemporary restaurants.
Hyundai Department Store Trade Center provides department-store shopping, a substantial basement food hall, restaurants and additional family facilities.
You can move between these destinations without treating them as three separate sightseeing stops.
Start With Starfield Library as Your Landmark
After exploring Hyundai Department Store during my recent visit, I followed the connection toward COEX Mall. From the particular exit I used, Starfield Library was immediately to my right.
I also noticed N.CAT, an affordable accessories shop, near that connection.
Your exact direction will depend on which department-store exit you use, so follow the Starfield Library signs rather than relying on a universal left-or-right instruction.
Once I reached the library, the surrounding mall layout became easier to understand.
The library serves as a useful central landmark, with shopping routes branching around it toward different parts of the complex.
For a first visit, I would identify three things on the directory: Starfield Library, the shopping area you most want to explore and the aquarium if you’re visiting it.
That is far more useful than trying to memorize every store.
A Practical COEX Mall Map and Store Directory

You can find electronic directories inside the mall, and the official Starfield website provides floor information and store locations.
I photographed several directories during my visit. They helped me understand how the different shopping routes connected around the library.
If you’re looking for a particular shop, use the official directory rather than an older travel-blog map. Store locations and temporary pop-ups may change.
Local tip: I also spotted a portable phone charger rental station inside the shopping complex. If your battery runs low after taking photos or using navigation apps, look for these QR-code-operated rental machines. Check the rental fees and return conditions on the machine before using one.

Starfield Library Seoul: Is It Worth Visiting?
Starfield Library is the main visual attraction at COEX Mall.
Its enormous curved bookshelves and high ceiling make it one of Seoul’s most recognizable indoor photography locations. However, after actually spending time sitting there, I think it offers more than an impressive photograph.
Surprisingly Comfortable, Even on a Busy Sunday

I visited during a three-day Korean holiday weekend. There were plenty of people taking photographs, walking around and sitting beside the bookshelves.
Yet the atmosphere was surprisingly calm.
Soft background music played, giving the space a feeling similar to a large bookstore. Although the library was busy, I didn’t find it excessively noisy or uncomfortable.
I was able to sit, browse the internet and take a break without feeling overwhelmed by the crowds.
Visitors were moving through the central area, but I didn’t experience the constant bumping and unpleasant congestion that sometimes occurs at popular tourist attractions.
That was my experience on one particularly busy Sunday, not a guarantee that every visit will be equally comfortable.
More Than a Quick Photo Stop
If you find an available seat, I recommend spending a little time enjoying the space instead of immediately leaving after taking photographs.
The library officially provides reading tables and power outlets suitable for laptop use. That makes it useful for a short break or a little light work, although you shouldn’t depend on finding a free table during busy periods.
It’s also free to enter.
For photographs alone, I would allow approximately 15–20 minutes. If you want to explore different viewpoints and sit for a while, 30–45 minutes is more comfortable.
During my visit, I also noticed a children’s picture-book section, which makes the library an additional short stop for families.
The published opening hours are 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Check the official Starfield Library information for updates.
Shopping at COEX Mall: What Is Actually Worth Buying?
COEX offers an extensive mixture of international chains, established Korean brands, smaller fashion shops, accessories, beauty products and character merchandise.
Rather than visiting every store, I suggest focusing on categories that offer something different from what you can easily find at home.
Korean Fashion Brands Versus Small Independent Shops
During my visit, I photographed Korean fashion brands including 8SECONDS and SPAO FRIENDS-related shopping.
I recommend starting with established Korean fashion brands if you’re looking for casual clothing at accessible prices.
You’ll also encounter smaller shops with styles that remind me of clothing commonly distributed through Seoul’s Dongdaemun wholesale fashion market.
They’re interesting to browse, but they’re not necessarily inexpensive.
My preference is to look through these smaller shops for inspiration, then compare the prices, materials and styles with established Korean brands before buying.
There’s nothing wrong with shopping at international chains, but I wouldn’t make them the main reason for visiting COEX.
For families, I also photographed TOPTEN KIDS, which is worth considering if you’re shopping for children’s everyday clothing.
Korean Underwear, Accessories and Beauty

Korean underwear and homewear are easy categories to overlook when planning a shopping trip.
I photographed VIVIEN and SOLB during my visit. They offer an alternative to spending all your shopping time on clothing or cosmetics.
For inexpensive accessories, I recommend browsing N.CAT near the connection I used between Hyundai Department Store and Starfield Library.
It’s an easy place to look for small gifts, hair accessories and everyday fashion items without committing to department-store prices.
Olive Young is another convenient option for beauty shopping. However, it has numerous branches throughout Seoul, so there’s no reason to visit COEX specifically for that store unless you’re already nearby.
Character Merchandise, Toys and Souvenirs

KAKAO FRIENDS is one of my favorite types of shops to recommend to overseas visitors interested in contemporary Korean character culture.
I photographed its colorful storefront during my visit.
I also came across toy and hobby stores and noticed souvenir shopping toward the aquarium side of the complex.
If you’re looking for gifts, I would compare character merchandise, Korean stationery and accessories rather than assuming that conventional tourist souvenirs are your only option.
Is Parnas Mall Worth Your Time?
Parnas Mall is worth a quick visit if you’re interested in premium fashion or a particular restaurant.
During my visit, I saw Onitsuka Tiger, lululemon, Ralph Lauren and Patagonia, along with Olive Young.
My walk through Parnas Mall took approximately seven minutes without stopping to shop.
Of course, you could spend much longer if you want to browse individual stores or eat there.
For visitors who aren’t particularly interested in its brands, I would treat Parnas Mall as a convenient addition to the route rather than a major sightseeing destination.
Where to Eat: COEX Mall, Parnas Mall or Hyundai?
One of the biggest advantages of this area is the enormous choice of food.
Instead of making a long list of restaurants, I think it’s more helpful to explain how the dining options differ.
My comparisons below combine previous dining experience with what I observed during my recent visit. The prices are approximate examples from that period, not fixed prices for every restaurant.
COEX Mall: Casual Meals and More Affordable Choices
If you want a relatively inexpensive, casual meal, start with the restaurants inside COEX Mall.
I saw a wide variety of options, including Korean dishes, pizza, Japanese-style pork cutlets, udon, burgers and snacks.
There were choices in the KRW 10,000s, making this the area I would investigate first if I wanted to keep the meal reasonably affordable.
The route toward the aquarium also had convenient places for desserts, drinks and quick food, including Gong Cha and Auntie Anne’s.
I wouldn’t recommend traveling around the entire complex to reach one fashionable restaurant unless it’s somewhere you particularly want to try.
Parnas Mall: Contemporary Restaurants
Parnas Mall has a somewhat different dining atmosphere.
It’s relatively casual but includes fashionable dining concepts that are popular in Korea. DimDimSum was one of the restaurants I noticed.
Several menus I observed had main dishes priced in the upper KRW 20,000s.
That doesn’t mean every restaurant costs the same, but it provides a useful comparison with the casual options in COEX Mall.
I’d choose Parnas Mall if the meal itself is part of the outing and you want something more deliberate than a quick lunch.
Hyundai Department Store: Food Hall or Spacious Restaurant

Hyundai Department Store gives you two quite different dining options.
The basement food hall offers a wide selection, and H’Kitchen is convenient when members of your group have different food preferences.
I also like the individual dining counters where solo diners can sit around the cooking area.
For a more relaxed meal, consider the restaurants on the 10th floor. From my previous experience, they offer a more spacious, service-oriented environment than many casual mall restaurants.
They can be a comfortable middle ground when you want a proper sit-down meal without choosing a hotel restaurant.
One warning for families: Hyundai’s basement food hall felt more crowded and less convenient for stroller navigation than the main shopping corridors.
If you’re visiting with a baby, check the available space before choosing where to eat.
Visiting COEX Mall With Kids and a Stroller
I have a long-standing connection to COEX as a family destination.
Starting in 2015, when my child was young, I regularly traveled from Sapyeong Station to Bongeunsa Station on Subway Line 9 with a lightweight stroller.
COEX Aquarium was one of our familiar family outings, along with frequent trips to Lotte World.
That experience is why I paid particular attention to the shopping corridors, rest areas and family facilities during my recent visit.
Is COEX Mall Stroller-Friendly?
Based on both my earlier family experience and my recent observations, I consider COEX a practical destination for families with strollers.
Even on a busy holiday Sunday, the main shopping corridors generally felt spacious.
Most people moved through the central walking routes, often leaving more room along the edges.
I didn’t find the crowds unpleasant, although the basement food hall at Hyundai Department Store was noticeably more congested.
However, my earlier subway journeys began in 2015, and access arrangements may have changed. I wouldn’t assume that every possible route between a subway platform, department store and shopping area is completely step-free.
If you’re visiting with a stroller today, check current elevator locations and choose your route accordingly.
Nursing Rooms and Family Facilities

I checked several family facilities during my recent visit.
At Hyundai Department Store Trade Center, the fourth floor has a nursing room and a children’s shopping area. I also found children’s books, seating and displays that could interest younger visitors.
These are useful places to look around or take a short break, but I wouldn’t describe them as a dedicated indoor playground.
The department store’s 11th-floor NOVAS PARK was another pleasant discovery. During my visit, families were enjoying the outdoor garden, and there were places to sit without purchasing a restaurant meal.

Inside Starfield COEX Mall, I visited a basement nursing-room location near the exhibition-hall side of the complex. A staff member was present, and someone was using the room, so I didn’t photograph the interior.
There was a restroom immediately beside it.
The mall’s official facilities guide lists nursing rooms and stroller rental services. The published stroller rental conditions have age and weight limits, so check them if you’re planning to rent rather than bring your own.

SEA LIFE COEX Aquarium: A Family Favorite From My Parenting Years

When my child was younger, we held an annual pass to COEX Aquarium and visited regularly.
That experience is one reason I still consider the aquarium a worthwhile family attraction rather than a quick extra stop on a shopping itinerary.
However, I didn’t go inside during my latest COEX research trip.
The aquarium was rebranded as SEA LIFE COEX, Seoul Aquarium in 2025, and its exhibits and experiences have changed since my earlier visits. I wouldn’t review its current interior based entirely on memories from when my child was younger.
According to the aquarium’s official guidance, most visitors spend approximately 90 minutes to two hours inside.
Strollers are permitted, although the aquarium advises folding them when using entrance or exit escalators. There is also a designated stroller parking area.
If you’re visiting with young children, I would consider making the aquarium the main activity of your trip, then shopping or eating afterward.
Don’t Underestimate the Walk From Starfield Library
On my latest visit, I walked toward the aquarium through the shopping corridors.
Because I followed the winding route and browsed along the way during a busy holiday, the journey took more than 20 minutes. I would allow approximately 25 minutes or more if you’re planning a similar shopping route.
That is not the shortest walking time between the library and the aquarium. A direct journey without browsing may be considerably faster.
Nevertheless, it illustrates why I wouldn’t casually add the aquarium to a one-hour COEX visit.
The aquarium’s published operating hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with last admission at 7 p.m. Check current tickets, opening hours and the latest exhibits on the official SEA LIFE COEX website.
Bongeunsa Temple: A Traditional Contrast to Modern COEX

If you have time beyond shopping and the library, consider visiting Bongeunsa Temple.
I’ve visited the temple grounds, and I think it offers a particularly appealing contrast with the modern shopping complex.
You can move from an enormous indoor shopping destination to an active Buddhist temple surrounded by Gangnam’s skyscrapers.
This makes Bongeunsa worth considering even if someone in your group isn’t interested in shopping.
It’s also conveniently located near Bongeunsa Station.
Remember that Bongeunsa is a place of worship. Respect ceremonies, signs and anyone who is praying, and check current visitor information before your visit.
I wouldn’t squeeze a proper aquarium visit, extensive shopping and Bongeunsa into just three hours. Choose your priorities or allow most of a day.
A Simple COEX Itinerary
If I were planning a first visit, I would start with the attraction I cared about most instead of trying to visit every store.
For a short visit: Head to Starfield Library first. Take photographs, explore the surrounding area and stop at one or two shops that interest you.
For a shopping visit: Begin from the station that best suits your plans. You can combine Parnas Mall, Hyundai Department Store and the shops around Starfield Library, then choose somewhere convenient for a meal.
For families: Make the aquarium your main attraction if that’s your priority. Allow additional time for food, breaks and stroller access rather than treating the aquarium as a quick shopping stop.
For a longer day: Combine Starfield Library, shopping and a meal with either the aquarium or Bongeunsa Temple. If you want both major attractions, allow most of the day.
For other ideas around the district, read my local guide to things to do in Gangnam.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Starfield Library free?
Yes. You can enter without buying a ticket, take photographs and use available seating. Its published opening hours are 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Which subway station is best for COEX Mall?
I found Bongeunsa Station on Line 9 more convenient for entering COEX Mall directly. Samseong Station on Line 2 is useful if you’d like to start with Parnas Mall or Hyundai Department Store.
Where can I find the COEX Mall store directory?
Use the official Starfield COEX Mall website or the electronic directories inside the shopping complex. Starfield Library is a useful central landmark once you’re inside.
Where should I eat if everyone wants something different?
I would start with Hyundai Department Store’s food hall or H’Kitchen. For casual and relatively affordable meals, explore COEX Mall. For contemporary restaurants, consider Parnas Mall.
Is COEX suitable for families with babies?
In my experience, most main shopping corridors are spacious, and there are several family facilities across the complex. Check current elevator routes and nursing-room locations before arriving with a stroller.
Can I visit COEX Mall and Bongeunsa Temple on the same day?
Yes. They’re close enough to combine comfortably. Whether you should also add the aquarium depends on how much time you have and how long you want to spend at each attraction.
My Final Recommendation
I think COEX is at its best when you treat it as a connected shopping, dining and sightseeing area rather than a single tourist attraction.
Starfield Library is the obvious highlight, but the convenient combination of Korean shopping, food, entertainment and family facilities is what makes the complex useful.
The biggest lesson from my recent visit is that a busy COEX doesn’t necessarily feel uncomfortable. Even during a holiday weekend, I could sit at the library, move through the main corridors and enjoy browsing without feeling overwhelmed.
My advice is to choose the right station, use Starfield Library as your main landmark and decide in advance whether shopping, the aquarium or another attraction deserves most of your time.
That simple planning makes COEX much more enjoyable than trying to see everything at once.
