Galleria Department Store Seoul: A Local’s Guide Beyond Luxury Shopping

Galleria Department Store in Apgujeong, Seoul

When visitors think of Galleria Department Store in Seoul, luxury brands may be the first thing that comes to mind. To me, though, Galleria is also one of the best places to see what feels current and fashion-forward in Seoul. If a friend wanted to get a sense of Korean luxury fashion and the trends surrounding it, this is one of the first places I would show them.

Galleria is in Apgujeong and is easy to reach by subway. WEST is directly connected to Exit 7 of Apgujeong Rodeo Station on the Suin–Bundang Line.

As someone who lives in Gangnam, though, I return for much more ordinary reasons too.

I spend more time in Galleria WEST than EAST. Sometimes I shop for shoes or bags. Other times, I buy bread, browse the food hall, have coffee, use a comfortable restroom, or simply take a break.

I rarely plan an entire day around Galleria. A visit usually fits into the time I already spend in Apgujeong.

For a first-time visitor, I would combine Galleria with the neighborhood rather than treat it as a destination on its own. After visiting the department store, I would walk through Apgujeong Rodeo, continue toward Dosan Park, and, if luxury shopping is a priority, head farther toward the flagship stores of Cheongdam.

Galleria Luxury Hall EAST vs WEST: How I Use Each Side

Galleria Luxury Hall is divided into EAST and WEST, but I use the two buildings quite differently.

EAST is much more focused on luxury brands. I usually go there when I have a particular luxury purchase in mind, or sometimes when I simply want to spend a little time somewhere quieter.

WEST feels closer to a full department store. It mixes luxury with younger fashion labels and more accessible premium brands, along with menswear, electronics, beauty, and the GOURMET 494 food hall downstairs. It is also the side directly connected to Exit 7 of Apgujeong Rodeo Station.

I spend much more time in WEST. Even when I am not planning to buy anything, I enjoy looking around because it gives me a sense of what feels current in Korean fashion. Even familiar brands can sometimes feel a little more fashion-forward here because of the way the merchandise is selected.

If it is your first visit and you are curious about Korean fashion trends rather than shopping only for major luxury houses, I would start with WEST.

Where I Look at Luxury Fashion

I enjoy Galleria’s fashion-focused atmosphere. It reminds me a little of how Barneys New York felt when I visited years ago.

I sometimes buy shoes and bags at Galleria. On some visits, I’ve found a good selection and been able to shop with less waiting than I’ve experienced elsewhere.

Inventory and queues vary, of course. I wouldn’t promise the same experience on every visit, but it is one reason I keep Galleria in mind when I’m shopping.

My More Ordinary Purchases: Bread and Dried Foods

Despite Galleria’s luxury image, some of my most frequent purchases are bread. I also buy dried foods from time to time.

Returning regularly gives me a different relationship with the store. Sometimes buying something small from the food hall is reason enough to stop by.

For me, bags and bread can easily be part of the same visit.

GOURMET 494: Useful for a Group, Less Convincing on Value

GOURMET 494 is on B1, the basement level of WEST, with restaurants, deli counters, and dessert shops. You can find everything from bread, rice cakes, and dried foods to casual meals such as Korean dishes, pasta, and burgers.

I’ve eaten there many times. I find the food relatively expensive, and the taste is often fairly ordinary. It would not automatically be my choice for one special meal in Apgujeong.

Where I do find it useful is when everyone in a group wants something different.

On my visits, I’ve ordered at an individual restaurant, received a pager, and found a table. After I placed the pager on the table, the food was brought over.

That arrangement makes things easier when one person wants Korean food and another wants something else. We can choose separately and still eat together.

If we all agree on what to eat, though, I would usually rather leave the department store and find a restaurant around Apgujeong.

Browsing the Food Hall—and Buying Groceries Elsewhere

I enjoy browsing the food section, particularly the bakery and specialty-food areas, but the prices often feel high to me.

For a grocery-shopping trip, I personally prefer Hyundai Department Store Apgujeong.

My Favorite Spot: The Space Beside Maison Southcape Cafe

Maison Southcape Cafe is on the fifth floor of WEST. What I like most is the setting, especially the piloti space beside it.

On one visit, I paid around ₩13,000 for a decaf iced latte. That is what I paid then, not a current menu price.

I thought the coffee was fairly ordinary for the price. On that particular visit, I also did not find the service especially warm, and no one offered water without being asked.

Even so, I would go back for the space.

The café feels relatively quiet and spacious to me. The piloti area beside it is my favorite place to sit when I want a change of mood or a quiet break from a busy day.

The coffee did not impress me as much as the surroundings did. Both are part of my experience.

A Comfortable Place to Pause

Sometimes I go into Galleria simply because I want somewhere comfortable and relatively quiet to spend a little time.

The restrooms are part of that. I appreciate a clean, spacious restroom and powder area after walking around Apgujeong or Cheongdam.

It may seem like a small detail in an article about a luxury department store, but I notice these conveniences as much as the shop displays.

My Experience With Valet Parking at EAST

I’ve also used valet parking at Galleria EAST.

What I liked most was collecting the car. On my visit, pickup was on the second floor, and I found it relatively easy to get back onto the main road.

The waiting area felt quiet. I also remember the nearby restroom and powder area, along with a place to get water.

When I asked about the process, I was told that no receipt check or separate service fee applied in my situation.

That was my experience on that visit. I would check the current parking and valet conditions before expecting the same arrangement.

It was one of those practical details that made the department store comfortable for me to use.

How Galleria Compares With Hyundai Apgujeong and Shinsegae Gangnam

I use these three department stores for different reasons.

Galleria feels the most fashion-focused to me. Hyundai Department Store Apgujeong feels more like a traditional upscale department store, and I prefer it when groceries are the main reason for going.

At Shinsegae Gangnam, I appreciate the scale of the surrounding complex and how easily I can combine different kinds of stops.

Why Shinsegae Gangnam Feels Like a Fuller Outing

At Shinsegae Gangnam, the department store does not feel like the only destination. It connects directly with JW Marriott Seoul, and the wider Express Bus Terminal complex adds restaurants and more affordable underground shopping.

Having lived in Banpo, I’m familiar with how easy it is to move between these different settings in one outing. Galleria feels more self-contained by comparison.

Where Galleria Feels More Limited

Galleria feels more self-contained to me, and more limited as an all-in-one destination than Shinsegae Gangnam.

There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, and fashion streets around Apgujeong Rodeo and Cheongdam. I enjoy visiting them, but they feel like separate stops rather than parts of one large connected complex.

If I wanted to spend a whole day moving between different activities with little planning, that would be a disadvantage.

For a shorter visit or a quiet break, however, Galleria’s more contained atmosphere can be part of its appeal.

How I Would Show Galleria to a First-Time Visitor

Whether I would suggest Galleria depends on what a friend wants from the visit.

For inexpensive shopping or a day packed with different activities, it would not be my first choice. For someone curious about what feels current in Korean luxury fashion, it would still be one of the first places I would show them.

I would spend some time in WEST, look at the fashion floors, and head downstairs to GOURMET 494. We might buy bread if something caught our eye, then go upstairs for a quieter break.

Afterward, I would continue into Apgujeong Rodeo, then walk toward Dosan Park or Cheongdam depending on how much time I had. That is closer to how I use Galleria myself: as one part of an outing in the neighborhood.

If you’re planning a longer visit, my Gangnam travel guide also covers COEX, Bongeunsa Temple and other places worth exploring.

What Keeps Me Coming Back

My relationship with Galleria includes shoes and bags, but also bread, restrooms, coffee, and somewhere to sit.

I use the food hall even though I often find the meals ordinary for the price. I would return to Maison Southcape Cafe for the space despite not being particularly impressed by the coffee or service on that visit.

Galleria is somewhere I would show a friend interested in luxury fashion. It is also somewhere I go for a small purchase or a quiet pause before walking back out into Apgujeong.
